CASE STUDY: BECHTEL ENGINEERING

Attorneys Hired In-House and Renewed for a Second Year

The Challenge

Integrate talent into in-house corporate team to support internal legal work and to further diversity and inclusion within the legal profession.

The Solution

Bechtel collaborated with Legal Innovators to deploy two junior lawyers to support the company’s Legal Department. Legal Innovators assisted the junior lawyers with continuous training and coaching. The junior lawyers worked with Bechtel’s legal team on projects and assignments in the engineering and construction industry while receiving mentorship and coaching from both Legal Innovators and Bechtel.

The collaboration exposed the junior lawyers to in-house legal experience in the complex world of construction and engineering.

The lawyers assisted in-house lawyers in many ways including: reviewing contracts, policies, and other documents; researching legal issues; drafting legal memoranda; preparing witnesses for arbitration; drafting and editing non- disclosure agreements; and reviewing interrogatory and discovery requests.

The junior lawyers were fully integrated in the everyday operations of the Legal Department. They conducted department-wide presentations, attended regular meetings, and participated in business resource group and department-wide events.

Regular check-ins with in-house attorneys enabled the Legal Innovators lawyers to receive and provide consistent feedback. Moreover, the junior lawyers received assignments based on their interests, further developing their skills, and assisting a variety of practice groups. They explored various areas of Bechtel’s business units and connected with Bechtel employees outside of the Legal Department.

Ultimately, the Legal Innovators lawyers further developed their practice skills and applied the training and coaching they received to add value to Bechtel’s legal team. Bechtel hired one of the junior attorneys in-house, and the Legal Innovators agreement was extended for another year for the second junior attorney, consistent with the Legal Innovators model.
