Steve Armstrong received his Bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York College at Buffalo and later earned a degree from Yale University.

Steve is a Principal of Firm Leader, Inc., a company which provides leadership, management, and business development programs for law firms and law departments. As an educator and consultant who has worked with law firms in the United States and internationally for more than 30 years, Steve guides law firms to think strategically about their talent. He conducts programs on managerial and leadership skills for practice group leaders, partners, counsel and associates as well as practice-building strategies for newer partners. Steve also helps law firms to create processes and cultures that enable lawyers to do their best work. In addition to leadership development programs, he has designed and implemented evaluation, promotion, and compensation systems, training curricula, diversity initiatives, associate surveys, and upward evaluations. He has led talent management and professional development groups at major law firms including WilmerHale, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind & Garrison; and Shearman & Sterling.

For more than 20 years, Steve has taught legal writing programs for lawyers and judges in the U.S. and Canada, law firms and government agencies. He is the co-author of Thinking Like a Writer: A Lawyer’s Guide to Effective Writing and Editing (3rd edition, Practising Law Institute, 2008).
